Who are Les Marmitons?
Les Marmitons Halifax is one of 18 chapters of a men’s cooking group, Les Marmitons International, which started in Montreal in 1977. We are composed of men of varying ages, backgrounds, and cooking abilities who enjoy camaraderie, food, and wine. We don’t consider ourselves chefs. ‘Marmitons’ is an old French word for ‘kitchen boy’ or ‘chef’s helper.’
We meet once a month from September through May at the ICCA and prepare a four or five-course meal paired with appropriate wines under the direction of a chef who has donated his or her time and provided us with the recipes. It is not a cooking course, we dig in and learn from one another as we go along, with occasional tips from the chef.
Although we are not a service club, we are pleased to have been able to give back to the culinary industry in various years. We have subsidized chefs, going to the Canadian culinary championship, created two bursaries at NSCC for visible minorities, donated to Feed Nova Scotia and have supported Olivia Sewell, a graduate of the NSCC culinary program, who is representing Canada in the world culinary skills competition currently taking place in Lyon France.
The Halifax chapter was launched in April 2015 with 15 members and has grown to a current roster of 40. We are pleased to be assisting the ICCA with a fundraising event next month. Membership enquiries may be addressed to lesmarmitons.halifax@gmail.com.
