ITALIAN LANGUAGE SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

FALL 2024 CLASS TIMES AND LOCATIONS

The classes for children and high school students are held in person on Saturday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:15 pm at the ICCA-NS Building, located at 2629 Agricola Street, Halifax, NS, B3K 4C7.

The term lasts 10 weeks. Please see the class descriptions below.

FALL TERM 2024

  • START DATE: Saturday, October 5th, 2024

  • FINISH DATE: Saturday, December 7th, 2024

  • TIMES: 10:00am to 12:15pm

REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR FALL TERM: Wednesday, September 25th.

The Italian Language Classes for children are structured according to age and language background, following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Lessons occur once a week for two hours and fifteen minutes on Saturday mornings. Italian language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) are taught by qualified teachers. 

Children can start as young as three years old (provided they are fully potty trained - meaning no diapers) and they are encouraged to speak Italian through play and music.

The school year is divided into two terms: Fall Term and Winter. Each term runs for a minimum of 10 weeks, each term requires a separate registration and fee. 

A special family rate is available for families enrolling two ($350 save $5/child) or three or more ($480 save $20/child) siblings. This special rate applies only to Children and High School students.

CHILDREN - 1 PRESCHOOL CLASS

AGES 3-5

Children learn the basics of Italian through songs, show and tell, stories and games. Games often include the recognition of animals, letters, numbers, or colours. Italian children's books are read and discussed together. 

This class will be offered in person on Saturday mornings at 10:00 am. 

Fee: $180 per term (10 classes). 

NOTE: All children must be fully potty trained (no diapers)


CHILDREN - 2

AGES 6-8

Children will learn to describe things and situations using simple sentences. They are encouraged to communicate in Italian and will start understanding easy questions and statements. At this level, children will learn the Italian alphabet and write simple words in Italian. Basic grammatical structures will be introduced in a playful manner, using short dialogues, songs, and games. 

This class will be offered in person on Saturday mornings at 10:00 am.  

Fee: $180 per term (10 classes).


CHILDREN - 3

AGES 9-13

Children will describe things and situations using simple sentences. They will communicate in Italian and understand basic questions and statements. At this level, children will begin reading and writing short sentences in Italian and become familiar with basic grammatical structures through playful activities and materials from various books. Handouts will be provided. 

This class will be offered in person on Saturday mornings at 10:00 am.  

Fee: $180 per term (10 classes).


HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

AGES 14-18

Level A2 to C2. The Nova Scotia Department of Education has approved Italian Language and Culture Classes as elective credits for Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Students will engage in dialogues in pairs and small groups, using a language experience approach that includes quizzes, role-plays, sentence frames, and games. They will express their preferences, discuss everyday topics, write letters and emails, and talk about time, transportation, hobbies, professions, family, food, holidays, seasons, weather, and friends. Students will read simple newspaper and magazine articles, write about their opinions and experiences, read books, watch Italian movies, and work on projects. Activities include videotaping interviews, debating, discussing current events, and learning how to write summaries. Learning materials will be provided. 

This class will be offered in person on Saturday mornings at 10:00 am

Fee: $180 per term (10 classes).
